MUSEUM TEACHER: CAMP
The National Building Museum inspires curiosity about the world we design and build. The work of the Education Department engages participants of all ages in a range of interdisciplinary activities and programs. The intended impact of the work is that participants investigate their own built world and value their role in shaping it for the future.
The position of Museum Teacher: Camp is responsible for learning, teaching, and developing curriculum for the Museum’s Summer Camp program, working in a team with another Museum Teacher. The position is responsible for the safety, care, and wellbeing of each camper group both on and off the Museum property.
The position is 30 hours/week mid-June to mid-August, 8 am–3 pm, with additional time before the first camp session to prepare and develop content.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop, plan and implement hands-on, project-based curriculum and activities for the Museum’s six-week summer camp. Some curriculum is already in place and will need to be modified to the Museum Teacher’s personal teaching style.
• Collaborate with camp team (another Museum Teacher and Camp Directors) on developing a weekly schedule for the campers.
• Set and enforce clear behavior expectations for campers; identify and respond to camper behavior issues appropriately as they arise; communicate behavior situations with the Camp Directors in an appropriate time frame.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Specific qualifications include:
• Must be 18 years or older at the start of camp.
• One year experience working with youth ages 6 and up, in an education, recreation, or care-giver setting.
• Experience modifying lessons and activities to meet different learning styles and abilities.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement a project from start to finish.
• Experience working as a member of a team as well as demonstrated ability to accomplish tasks independently.
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, recreation, museum studies or related field; relevant professional experience can be substituted.
• Knowledge of or interest in architecture, design, engineering, and the built environment is desirable but not required.
• This is an active work position that requires the ability to move about the Museum frequently and to position oneself to interact & communicate appropriately with participants. Employee may be responsible for moving objects up to 20 lbs. when needed.
• Offsite travel required as part of the position during the course of the work day.
